Dr. Walker has long performed experimental and clinical research with a particular focus on the role of the local inflammatory microenvironment in carcinogenesis of the thyroid, prostate, and mammary glands. His research involves basic, translational, and clinical areas of biomedicine. In this basic research the focus is to understand the role of chronic inflammation and cancer stem cells in cancer development and metastasis with the aim to develop appropriate biomarkers for early detection and prognosis.
Another focus is to understand and identify novel immune system targets in order to monitor the efficacy of the treatment of nutrition disorders using in vivo biomedical imaging. He is an experienced researcher, especially in the prostate and mammary gland animal model systems and his research relates to immune-mediated disorders, cell-signaling, and cytokine network. His current focus is to develop a novel approach for rapid detection of cancer in the human tissue specimen/biopsy and surgical wound by topical application of quenched activity based probes.
Currently he is focused on detection of surgical margin in patients with non-melanoma skin cancer. His recent studies show that development of a live-time imaging technique to rapidly and reliably identify basal and squamous skin cancer in the margins of conventionally resected skin cancer samples would significantly impact the quality of patient care.
