Between 2000 and 2030, the percentage of people over the age of 65 will increase from 12.4% of the population to 19.6% [1]. Th is increase will continue during our lifetimes given that the 65 to 85 age group is projected to increase by 135% between 2000 and 2050 [2]. In 1960, only 9% of the U.S. population was over the age of 65, whereas today 13% is [3]. Rhinologists will be treating many of the elderly based on the high prevalence of sinonasal diseases.
