Dr. Danilo Wilhelm Filho, is a biologist graduated at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS, 1977), MSc. and PhD. in the same institution (1980 and 1994, respectively). During 1981-1982 spent one year in a laboratory at the Odense University, Denmark, under the advisement of Dr. Roy E. Weber, working on properties of fish hemoglobins. Since 1983 he start working at the Departamento de Ecologia e Zoologia, Centro de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), and since 1994 became Professor at the same insitution. In the last 30 years has been working on oxidative stress involving environmental contamination and human diseases (Chagas’ Disease, Down Syndrome, hepatitis C, obesity, among others), including occupational diseases related to coal mining and combustion, as well as on environmental toxicology related to industrial effluents and other contaminants such as pesticides (gliphosate and malathion), using fish and mollusks as bioindicators. He was the mentor and the first coordinator of the Post-Graduation Curse in Ecology (Sensu lato), as well as of the Professional Master Degree Curse in Environmental Expertise at the same institution. In the last three decades he advised more than sixty students in Pharmacy, Biochemistry and Ecology, and published more than eighty papers in important scientific journals, while attending international scientifc meetings through oral and other presentations in these areas. Since 2013 became retired and is now a collaborator researcher at UFSC.
